For this project, we had to research a protein disease. In a document or poster, we had to describe how a protein can cause a disease by going into a detailed explanation of protein synthesis. Compare the normal protein to the misfiled protein of our disease, and give some general background information on the disease (i.e. symptoms, what body parts the disease affects, what protein is affected, what the type of people most commonly affected are, and what the treatments or cures are, if any). For are project we got assigned Marfans Syndrome. We decided to make a brochure describing the effects, symptoms, how it is created, and the people affected by Marfans Syndrome
Content
Proteins-any of a class of nitrogenous organic compounds that consist of large molecules composed of one or more long chains of amino acids and are an essential part of all living organisms. It relates to our project because proteins are created from protein synthesis.
DNA-The basic code of life. Formed from nucleic acid and provides the code for all life functions.
Translation- second stage of protein synthesis. The transcribed mRNA is sent from the nucleus to the cytoplasm to be processed in a ribosome.
Protein Folding- the third stage of protein synthesis. Protein folding begins immediately after translation and even happens during it. It takes place in the endoplasmic reticulum, rough and smooth, and the golgi apparatus.
Nucleus-a dense organelle present in most eukaryotic cells, typically a single rounded structure bounded by a double membrane, containing the genetic material.
mRNA- messenger RNA.
tRNA- transfer DNA Misfiling- The malformation of a protein due to an improper amino acid sequence.
Polypeptide Chain- a single chain of amino acids held together by amino bonds
Codon:a sequence of three nucleotides that together form a unit of genetic code in a DNA or RNA molecule
Anti-Codon: a sequence of three nucleotides forming a unit of genetic code in a transfer RNA molecule, corresponding to a complementary codon in messenger RNA.
amino acid- simple organic compounds containing both carboxyl (—COOH) and amino (—NH2) groups. We used them because they deliver amino acids required for the process of protein synthesis.
RNA polymer- an enzyme that is responsible for making RNA from a DNA template.
Ribosome- An organelle that makes polypeptide chains by reading mRNA and channeling anti- codons.
Reflection
For this project I felt like are group did a really good job at communicating and deciding how are work would be spread out and who did what. We created a group chat where we would talk about what we would do for the project and what we where confused about. I also felt like we did a good at managing are time, we got all of are work done pretty quickly and done on time. One thing I felt like we could have done a better job at was improving are work when we finished it. We finished with some time to spar and we kinda sat around for a little instead of making are already pretty good project even better. I also feel like we kinda "burned out" and really had trouble staying on task and doing the work that we where suppose to be doing on the last few days we had the project
