For this project we where assigned to find out a "murder" We where supposed to find out who did it by taking the blood that was found at the scene and mating it to one of the suspects. Next we took the fingerprints of the knife that was used to kill the person and found out who's print it was. Lastly we where told that Nancy Normal had Huntington's disease which can make people act out, making Nancy the obvious choice. After that mw and my group mates created and story and motive for why Nancy would have killed Carlton Comet.
Content
Pedigree - A diagram that uses the family tree of an individual to assess their risk of certain genetic conditions that their close ancestors had.
Karyotype - A diagram that displays the chromosomes of an individual. It can be used to identify chromosome disorders in them.
Ink chromatography - In this process, a piece of paper that has ink on it is partially submerged in alcohol, As the alcohol moves up the paper, it separates the ink into its component color.
Genetic Disease - A disease caused by a mutation in our DNA.
Genetic Mutation - A mistake in our genome, may be harmless, or may cause a genetic disease.
Point mutation - A mutation where only a single nucleotide is changed.
Substitution - A type of point mutation where a single nucleotide is switched out for another.
Insertion - A point mutation where a random nucleotide is added to the sequence.
Deletion - A point mutation where a random nucleotide is added.
Complete Dominance - When a trait is completely dominant over another, it will always be expressed when an allele coding for it is present.
Co-dominance - When two traits are co-dominant, they are both dominant.
Incomplete Dominance - When two traits have incomplete dominance. Punnet Squares - A diagram used to assess the probability of an offspring's traits based on the alleles of the parents.
Genetic Engineering - Using technology to alter the genome of an organism to benefit human use.
Reflection
In this project I felt like I could have done a better job at organizing my work. For example on this project when me and my group members where analyzing are project we realized that a majority of our work was missing, this was a big problem that we eventually had to solve by "restarting" and remembering our results and using other groups for help. I also learned the importance of writing down observations when doing a lab like this. If I where to write my observations down, when we lost our work it would have been a lot easer to restart having some base of what happened in the lad on a pice of paper. One thing I thought our group did well on was creativity. As you can see in our slide show we went a little out of the box in oder to make the presentation more fun for the class and ourselves. We also did a good job at being resourceful. When we found out our work was gone we quickly got the papers we needed and started filling the out as best we could. This was crucial for the final project.
